How Michael Jordan Still Scores Big In Pop Culture
From his days as a young college player to his 15-season reign with the NBA, Michael Jordan’s impact on basketball is unquestionable. With his signature number 23 jersey and an unrivaled skill set, he earned his place as one of the best players of all time and created countless moments the sporting world will never forget. But basketball is only part of Jordan’s legacy. His impact on pop culture, from shoes to collectibles to movies, surpasses that seen by almost any other player in the sport.
Jordan has an incredible list of achievements to his name. His college team, the North Carolina Tar Heels from the University of North Carolina, won the NCAA in 1982. In 1984, Jordan was part of the American basketball team that won the gold medal at the Olympic Games – and again in 1992. He and the Chicago Bulls won their first NBA Championship in 1991, completing Jordan’s Triple Crown of titles: NCAA, Olympics, and NBA.
He went on to win six NBA Championships with the Bulls between 1991 and 1998. These wins included two “three-peats” when the team won three consecutive NBA Finals from 1991 to 1993 and 1996 to 1998. In 2017, a statue was erected in Chicago in Jordan’s honor. Named “The Spirit”, it depicts Jordan leaping through the air for a slam dunk, with the dates of his time with the Bulls inscribed on the base.

Jordan’s agility, speed, and unwavering competitiveness made him a force to be reckoned with on the court. But what truly put him in the limelight were his famous slam dunks. He won his first Slam Dunk Contest in 1987 and claimed victory again in 1988. His signature move was to get a slam dunk from the free-throw line, earning him the nickname “His Airness”. 1988 is seen by many as one of the best years of Jordan’s career. He won his first NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) award and averaged an incredible 35 points per game that season.
These are only some highlights of his career, but safe to say that Jordan’s reputation as one of the greatest basketball players was cemented early on. In 1985, Nike produced their now-famous Air Jordans. These sneakers rocketed to popularity; everyone wanted to be like Mike. 40 years later, their many different designs rank among the most influential sneakers of all time.

Speaking of being like Mike… in 2002, the movie Like Mike starring Bow Wow (formerly Lil’ Bow Wow, a.k.a. Shad Moss) and Morris Chestnut hit the big screens. The plot centers around a 13-year-old orphan who finds a pair of sneakers with the faded letters “MJ” written inside and becomes an NBA superstar thanks to the power of the sneakers. If you needed any more proof of Michael Jordan’s influence on pop culture, this is it.
And it wasn’t even MJ’s first movie; in 1996, he joined the Looney Tunes gang in Space Jam for a bizarre and endlessly entertaining adventure. He has numerous other credits to his name, including the 2023 movie Air, which dramatized the start of that monumental partnership between Michael Jordan and Nike.
Outside of movies and sneakers, Jordan has been immortalized time and again through action figures, merchandise, and other collectibles. The Jumpman logo, the silhouette of Jordan in mid-air with a basketball in hand, is owned by Nike and is now featured on most NBA players’ uniforms. This logo has become a badge of honor for fans to wear on shoes, caps, shorts, shirts, socks, and any other piece of clothing they can get their hands on. New designs are released every year, confirming Jordan’s far-reaching and global influence.

When it comes to collectibles, Funko has produced some of the best. Their huge range of products includes figures commemorating the highlights of his career. The vinyl Pop! figure from the NBA All-Stars line shows him in his iconic white number 23 jersey and celebrates his 1988 Slam Dunk Contest win. Then there’s Funko Pop! Jordan in his red Chicago Bulls jersey, performing yet another of his famous slam dunks. Needless to say, it’s a huge hit among fans.
Of course, Funko isn’t the only company in the game. Medicom has a popular line of Jordan figures, including the 1992 Team USA action figure. It commemorates the “Dream Team” at the 1992 Olympics – Jordan’s second time on the Olympic team and his second time bringing home a gold. Enterbay, Mattel, Storm Toys, and Danbury Mint are just some of the many other companies that have celebrated Jordan’s achievements across his varied and remarkable career.

Jordan retired from basketball for the last time in 2003 but he has never gone far from the minds and hearts of fans. Nike Air Jordans are still some of the most popular sneakers on the market. Michael Jordan action figures, toys, collectibles, and merchandise continue to crowd the shelves globally. His reign over the basketball court may have come to an end but Michael Jordan remains one of the most recognizable and memorable pop culture icons. With his jaw-dropping slam dunks from the free-throw line and his skill, speed, and absolute determination on the court, Mike has left a legacy that stands the test of time.
