When Is The Hunter X Hunter Manga Coming Back?

Read Time:6 Minute, 56 Second

Hunter x Hunter fans have waited a long time for the return of their beloved manga. Created by Yoshihiro Togashi, the iconic series has captured the hearts of millions with its action-packed but moving plot, distinctive characters, and imaginative world-building. With 400 chapters released to date, fans have been yearning to find out what’s next for our beloved characters. And it’s finally happening: at the time of this article, new chapters are due to be released next month.

Originally debuting in 1998, the Hunter x Hunter manga quickly gained momentum and became a fan-favorite within the manga/anime community. It follows the journey of the young and determined Gon Freecss as he embarks on a quest to find his father and become a Hunter, a professional who travels the world exploring unknown places, seeking treasure and rare or unidentified animal species, and pursuing lawless individuals to bring them to justice. Along the way, Gon encounters numerous allies and adversaries, each with their own unique abilities and motivations.

Togashi is praised for his world-building, interweaving of plotlines and character arcs, and ability to blend emotional, often heart-breaking scenes with humor and fun. He gives every character a distinctive, bold appearance that makes them strikingly unique and memorable. It’s these characters that stand out in most fans’ minds when they think of Hunter x Hunter

Unfortunately, since 2006, Togashi has been plagued by ill health. He is very open about his health issues, speaking candidly about the struggles he faces trying to continue writing and drawing while suffering from severe back and hip pain. With his condition, sitting for long periods of time has gradually become impossible for him. He is forced to take long hiatuses to recover, resulting in interruptions to the frequency and consistency of manga chapter releases.

The announcement of the return of the Hunter x Hunter manga has sparked a widespread celebration among fans worldwide. Togashi last released chapters in November 2022 as part of the ongoing Succession Arc. Fans have had to wait two years for the next installments, so you can imagine their joy when Togashi announced that ten new chapters will be released on October 7th, 2024

Most exciting for many fans is the hinted return of Gon, who has been absent from the manga for a few years while the Succession Arc focused on his friend, Kurapika. The video released by Togashi in August highlighted many characters, including Gon, leading to hopes that our favorite protagonist will make his appearance in the manga for the first time since 2016.

Fans also hold out hope that the Hunter x Hunter anime may resume at some point. The anime began in 2011 and ran until 2014. It has never been officially canceled but it’s been ten years since a new episode was released. This is due to the manga’s frequent and often prolonged hiatuses. However, with new chapters on the horizon and further proof that Togashi is determined to continue his work for as long as he can, anime fans are optimistic that the beloved series may return someday.

Yoshihiro Togashi is one of many mangaka who have spoken out about the mental and physical toll their work takes on them. Their work requires intense concentration and long hours of writing and illustrating, often under time pressure or with strict deadlines. And because so many mangaka are self-employed, they are not protected by labor laws. Most of all, however, is their dedication to their fans and their love of their work. Many continue to battle with their health issues for the sake of the characters and stories they have created and the people who love them. Mangaka Tite Kubo, for example, famously decided to persevere with his masterpiece, Bleach, after receiving a fan letter while he was in hospital.

Togashi shows a similar strength and determination to honor his fans by continuing to create new chapters whenever he can. In return, his fans are outspoken in their support and appreciation for his continued work. The realities of the stresses and health consequences faced by mangaka are becoming better known and understood. It’s important for us all to celebrate the hard work of these incredible creators, while also advocating for their health and wellbeing.

In late 2023, Togashi surprised fans and the wider manga community by releasing the ending of Hunter x Hunter. It’s actually one of four endings he has considered for his beloved manga, but it’s the one he feels fans will be most satisfied with. He did this so that if he was not able to complete the manga due to his severe ill health, fans would at least have some closure. If you need any more proof of his incredible love and appreciation for his fans, this is it. And while fans hope that he will be able to bring the manga to its completion, they were moved by his thoughtfulness and dedication.

All of this contributes to the manga world’s excitement in receiving the newest chapters of Hunter x Hunter. After the two-year hiatus, fans are eager to find out how our characters will face their next challenges, what new developments will occur, and whether old characters will finally make their way back onto the page. Given Togashi’s health challenges, the chapters feel all the more precious, delivered with such dedication and determination by the incredible mangaka. However long it takes before Hunter x Hunter next returns, we know it will be worth the wait.
