Vampire: The Masquerade Welcomes New Players To The Chilling World Of Darkness
Vampire: The Masquerade (VTM) is a dark fantasy tabletop roleplaying game (TTRPG) set in the immersive World of Darkness universe. It is the first game in this gothic horror setting, where you take on the role of a vampire, hiding in plain sight as you navigate a web of political intrigue, supernatural power struggles, and the constant danger of losing your humanity.
Vampire: The Masquerade was created by Mark Rein-Hagen, with the first edition released in 1991. Over the past three decades, it has remained one of the most popular horror tabletop RPGs, especially for those who enjoy deep storytelling, immersive roleplaying, and gothic horror themes.
Since its release, the world and lore of Vampire: The Masquerade have expanded to include graphic novels, tabletop expansions, and video games – most notably, the highly acclaimed Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines, released in 2004. The long-awaited sequel, Bloodlines 2, is set to release in 2025, rekindling excitement in the VTM community. Additionally, the tabletop roleplaying game is interconnected with other titles in the World of Darkness universe, such as Hunter: The Reckoning, Mage: The Ascension, Werewolf: The Apocalypse, and Wraith: The Oblivion.
This article serves as a beginner’s guide to Vampire: The Masquerade, focusing on character creation, core game mechanics, and essential rules for new players. If you would like a comprehensive look at the game, you can get the Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition (V5) Core Rulebook here.
Building Your Vampire Character: A Step-by-Step Guide
The first step in creating a compelling Vampire: The Masquerade character is designing the foundations of your vampire’s identity, personality, and abilities. Here are the key elements to consider when constructing a character that is both engaging and fun to roleplay.
1. Choose Your Clan: The Pillars of Vampire Society
Choosing your vampire clan is the starting point for shaping your character. Each clan offers unique powers, abilities, and weaknesses, influencing how you approach the game. Whether you’re drawn to the sophisticated, aristocratic lifestyle of the Ventrue, the rebellious, chaotic existence of the Brujah, or the mysterious and artistic Toreador, there’s a clan that aligns with your playstyle.
There are 13 different vampire clans in VTM, divided into three major factions:
- The Camarilla Clans: Emphasizing tradition, order, and secrecy, the Camarilla enforces the Masquerade – the law that conceals vampires’ existence from humans. These clans are politically structured and deeply intertwined in power struggles and manipulation.
- The Sabbat Clans: The Sabbat rejects the rules of the Camarilla, embracing freedom, chaos, and their monstrous vampire nature. These clans are often more violent and extreme, disregarding traditional vampire society.
- The Independent Clans: These clans walk their own path, choosing neither the Camarilla nor the Sabbat. They operate with unique motivations, making them wild cards in the World of Darkness.
For a detailed breakdown of all the vampire clans, including their Disciplines (supernatural abilities), strengths, and weaknesses, you can get the V5 Player’s Guide [here].

2. Assigning Traits and Skills: Defining Your Character’s Strengths
Your vampire’s traits and skills determine how they interact with the world. Players start with a set number of points to allocate across three primary attributes:
Physical Traits
- Strength: Determines how much you can lift or how hard you can hit.
- Dexterity: Affects your agility, grace, and fine motor control.
- Stamina: Reflects your endurance and ability to withstand physical hardship.
Social Traits
- Charisma: Your charm, sex appeal, and natural presence.
- Manipulation: How well you can influence others with your words.
- Composure: Your ability to stay calm under pressure and control your emotions.
Mental Traits
- Intelligence: Your logical reasoning and research capabilities.
- Wits: Quick thinking, adaptability, and observation skills.
- Resolve: The determination and focus you have to see your plans through.
Additionally, skills are divided into three categories: Talents, Skills, and Knowledge. These include familiar abilities like Stealth, Athletics, and Intimidation, as well as unique ones like Firearms, Etiquette, and Finance. Your choices will shape how your vampire interacts with the game world.
3. Crafting a Backstory: Who Were You Before the Embrace?
A compelling vampire backstory is essential to developing an immersive character. Consider:
- Who was your character before they became a vampire?
- How do they feel about their new existence?
- What moral dilemmas do they struggle with?
Your backstory influences your character’s motivations, weaknesses, and relationships, making roleplaying more immersive and engaging.
4. Other Considerations
There are additional factors to consider, such as Disciplines (abilities tied to your clan) and the generation of your vampire, but these are elements we won’t dive into as deeply in this guide. What’s most important is understanding how your choices – particularly when it comes to traits and skills – will influence the outcomes of dice rolls and the direction your character’s story will take. Again, for a more comprehensive guide, get the 5th edition Game Play Core Rulebook here.
Now that we’ve sunk our teeth into the process of character creation, it’s time to dive into the gameplay mechanics and explore what makes a Vampire: The Masquerade campaign truly unforgettable.

Game Mechanics & The Rules of Engagement
The key to running a successful Vampire: The Masquerade campaign (or any tabletop RPG) is finding a great Game Master (GM). A skilled GM or Storyteller in VTM, is one who listens closely to the players and customizes the campaign to fit their characters. They take the time to understand each character’s backstory, motivations, and goals, weaving these personal elements into the broader story. This attention to detail makes each session feel distinct and immersive, creating a more dynamic and collaborative storytelling experience for everyone at the table or online. When starting a new campaign, it’s important to hold a session zero where the group can align on expectations and introduce their characters to the Storyteller, ensuring everyone is on the same page from the outset.
Vampire: The Masquerade stands out from many other tabletop RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons, which often center around action and combat. While VTM does include combat, players may go through entire sessions without engaging in physical altercations. The game is heavily focused on character development and storytelling, with much of the gameplay revolving around the intricate interactions between the different vampire clans and the constant struggle to maintain their secrecy. The emphasis is on navigating political intrigue, personal struggles, and the complex dynamics of vampire society, rather than on traditional combat-focused adventures.
In VTM, all conflict resolution is done using ten-sided dice (D10). The number of dice you roll is determined by the traits and skills your Game Master (GM) calls for in a particular situation. For example, if the GM asks you to make a roll using your Stealth and Dexterity, you would add up the total number of dots you have in both those categories and roll that many dice. So, if you have 3 dots in Stealth and 2 in Dexterity, you’d roll 5 dice.
To determine if your roll is successful, the Storyteller will set a difficulty level based on how challenging the task is. For a roll to succeed, you need to roll a 6 or higher on at least one of the dice. Keep in mind that while you might succeed in tasks, being a vampire comes with its own complications, like the need to feed regularly.
At the start of each night, you roll a single D10 to determine how hungry your character is. If the roll fails, your hunger increases by one level. For example, if your hunger is at level 2, you would replace 2 of your regular dice with hunger dice (these should be a different color than the rest of your dice to distinguish them). Hunger dice can add an extra layer of chaos to the game – if you roll too high on these, even your successful actions might turn dangerous, as the beast within you takes over, leading to bloody consequences. While Vampire: The Masquerade has some unique gameplay mechanics like the hunger mechanic, many of its fundamental dice roll systems are similar to those found in other RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons and Legend of the Five Rings, including mechanics for checks and the use of willpower.
If you’re new to tabletop roleplaying games, it can feel a bit overwhelming at first. However, now with a basic understanding of how to create a character and how the rules work, you’ll be ready to jump into your first campaign. The VTM community is known for being welcoming and supportive, so don’t hesitate to ask for help as you play.
